This workshop will cover the registration, functionality and use of Zenodo. An example dataset will be used to demonstrate how to upload a dataset to Zenodo. The assignment of meaningful metadata, which is crucial for the discoverability of research data, will be discussed. The possibility of re-using your data is increased by good documentation of the data. The importance of good documentation and metadata will be illustrated in short practical exercises. 

CouFrac2024 - The 4th International Conference on Coupled Processes in Fractured Geological Media

Geo.X Workshop on Groundwater Recharge in the Berlin-Brandenburg Region

Brandenburg, one of Germany’s driest states, faces severe droughts and changing rainfall patterns, impacting groundwater levels. The link between climate factors and groundwater recharge has been overlooked, causing inconsistencies in water budgets. This workshop brings together experts to develop research ideas and a proposal addressing surface-groundwater interactions under climate change.

NFDI4Earth Academy | Coffee lecture | Data Train

Full title: Introducing Data Train: Training in Research Data Management and Data Science by Lina Schaare, U Bremen Research Alliance

The Data Train program offers free training in research data management and data science for early career researchers across all disciplines. It includes lectures, workshops, and interdisciplinary events to develop data skills. Integrated into the Bremen region’s data competence center since November 2023, it is supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and funded by the European Union. The lecture highlights how NFDI4Earth researchers can engage in the 2025 edition of Data Train.

Plenary NFDI4Objects

NFDI4Objects, an NFDI closely related to aspects of NFDI4Earth has advertised its yearly plenary. This consortium is dedicated to the material heritage of around three million years of human and environmental history. There is interdisiplinary overlap from research institutions working on common projects, participation in the plenary can be of interest also to NFDI4Earth researchers. A poster session will be organized, where it is possible to speak and discuss about current projects. Abstract submission will be end of June.

Spatial Data Science across Languages (SDSL) 2024

The second installment of the SDSL Workshop will take place on 18th-19th September 2024 at the Geographical Institute of Charles University in Prague. The Integrated Climate Data Center at the Universität Hamburg will provide an in-person workshop on July 25+26th.

Data Centers have certain demands regarding the content and format of ESS data - we will focus in this workshop on creating CF (Climate and Forecast) compliant netCDF files. We encourage the target group - ESS doctoral candidates, master students and scientists - to bring their own data, but we will also provide data sets that can be used during the workshop. Prerequisites are programming skills in Python.

FOSS4G Europe 2024

The Free and Open Source Software for Geospatial Europe conference is the European branch event of the Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo) annual conference. It is the FOSS4G European community’s highlight event that brings together developers and users of open source geoinformatics software, professionals and policymakers, entrepreneurs and investors, the academic community and students.

HeFDI Code School: Sustainable Research Software (EN)

The HeFDI Code School: Sustainable Research Software is a cooperation between HeFDI (Hessian Research Data Infrastructures), Suresoft project, NFDI4Earth and NFDI4Ing. The HeFDI Code School addresses the need of especially early career researchers to learn how to create good scientific software and improve the quality of their code for better reusability and sustainability.  

Workshops are offered from 26th of April to 4th of July 2024 on two tracks: introduction into basic programming and data science skill (online) and advanced skills in research software development (hybrid). All workshops are free-of-charge and require registration.

OGC Innovation Days Europe

The OGC Innovation Days Europe will focus on themes of Climate and Disaster Resilience, One Health, and the corresponding Data Spaces. Laser Radar Conference

The 31st International Laser Radar Conference (ILRC)  will be held together with the 22nd Coherent Laser Radar Conference (CLRC) in Landshut, Bavaria from 23^rd to 28^th of June 2024. Online Event launch "Minimal viable product" of platform Umwelt.info

Umwelt.info is excited to announce the launch of its portal through a fully-online event showcasing the Minimal Viable Products, the first version of the portal, as a one-day online event. The platform is aimed to be the central portal for environmental and nature conservation information in Germany. GeoDPA 2024

Geoinformation Data, Processing and Applications 2024 (GeoDPA 2024) - DLR International Conference

This three-day event will focus on upcoming user needs related to all types of georeferenced data, the generation and processing of Earth observations and geodata and their applications. Many users use georeferenced data generated by DLR for their scientific and industrial applications in space, aeronautics, energy, transport and security. The upcoming DLR GeoDPA Conference will focus on these user needs, also enhancing the networking and interactive exchange between users and producers of georeferenced data from various communities.

The conference program includes inspiring keynotes followed by interactive poster sessions, sessions on EuroGEO activities and goals, and the GEOSS and FAIR data principles, an overview on ongoing DLR project showcases, a trade fair by companies and service providers, a panel discussion with scientists, industry and policymakers, research activities from the DLR projects Digital Atlas 2.0 and ELK.

Ziel der Workshop-Reihe „Umweltinformationssysteme (UIS)“ ist es, den neuesten Stand von Forschung und Entwicklung in der Umweltinformatik und in umweltbezogenen IT-Anwendungsbereichen vorzustellen und zu diskutieren. TSK 20

The 20th symposium on Tectonics, Structural Geology and Crystalline Geology (TSK 20) serves as the main forum for exchanging information and networking activities in the fields of tectonics, structural geology, magmatic and metamorphic petrology and related disciplines. The conference is also intended to be a forum for orogenic-scale studies that focus on the interaction of active tectonics and landscape formation and apply quantitative geodynamic and rheological modeling approaches with landscape evolution modeling.

FOSSGIS 2024

Die FOSSGIS-Konferenz ist im D-A-CH-Raum die führende Konferenz für Freie und Open-Source-Software für Geoinformationssysteme sowie für die Themen Open Data und OpenStreetMap. 13. Deutsche Klimatagung

Workshop zur angewandten Datenanalyse für die öffentliche Verwaltung durch (Datengestützte Archivierung von Gerichtsakten am Beispiel der Zivilprozessakten)

5. Anwendertreffen 3D-Geologie und GIS

Das 5. Treffen der Anwendergruppe 3D-Geologie und GIS wird vom Forum Geoinformationstechnologien des Berufsverbandes Deutscher Geowissenschaftler e.V. (BDG) und der Fachsektion Geoinformatik der Deutschen Geologischen Gesellschaft – Geologische Vereinigung (DGGV) ausgerichtet. High-Pressure Experimental Techniques and Applications to the Earth’s Interior

This DMG "Doktorandenkurs" will provide an introduction to state-of-the-art experimental methods in mineralogy, geochemistry and geophysics as applied to understanding the composition, structure and dynamics of the Earth’s interior. Topics to be covered include high-pressure/high-temperature experimental methods, spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction at high-pressure, transmission electron microscopy, thermodynamics and phase equilibria, high-pressure crystal chemistry, equations of state, transformation kinetics, diffusion and deformation. The course will be held in the laboratories of Bayerisches Geoinstitut. 

There is no fee for the course. Non-Bayreuth student members of DMG are eligible for travel support to the amount of Euro 100,-. Registration before January 8, 2024.

Workshop zur Entwicklung von Kriterien für die Bewertung der Archivwürdigkeit von Daten der Bio-/Geowissenschaften

Im Bereich der Bio-/Geowissenschaften ist die Formalisierung und Professionalisierung im Umgang mit Daten hinsichtlich der Langzeitsicherung und -archivierung nicht sehr ausgeprägt. Unter Langzeitsicherung von Daten wird im wissenschaftlichen Kontext meist als zehnjährige Aufbewahrung im Sinne der Regeln guter wissenschaftlicher Praxis verstanden. Oft wird diese Aufgabe schon mit der Publikation der Daten als erledigt angesehen. Was die Aspekte der Nachnutzung wissenschaftlicher Daten anbelangt, herrscht verbreitet die Einstellung, prinzipiell alle Daten aufbewahren zu wollen. In der Praxis bestimmen jedoch oft Kapazitätsgrenzen und/oder Übergabeszenarien bei der Auflösung von Forschungsgruppen oder dem Ausscheiden einzelner Mitarbeitenden die Praxis, wie Daten für eine evtl. Nachnutzung bereitgehalten werden. Neben technologischen Fragen und einer ausstehenden Klärung der Verantwortlichkeiten für die Archivierung stellen vor allem die große Vielfalt von Daten („Long Tail of Science“), sowie Unklarheit über geeignete Bewertungskriterien Hinderungsgründe für eine strukturierte Langzeitarchivierung wissenschaftlicher Daten dar.

Als Spezialisten für die Aufbewahrung, Organisation und den Betrieb geeigneter Repositorien für eine Langzeitverfügbarmachung archivwürdiger Artefakte, verfügen Archive über sowohl eine breite Erfahrung, als auch über geeignete Konzepte und Verfahren zur Beurteilung der Archivwürdigkeit von Archivalien. Insofern ist es naheliegend, Experten aus auf dem Gebiet des Forschungsdatenmanagements in den Bio-/Geowissenschaften mit Experten auf dem Feld der Archive zusammenzubringen, um Lösungsvorschläge für die Frage der Langzeitarchivierung von Forschungsdaten zu entwickeln.

Ziel des Workshops ist es, gemeinsam Kriterien für die Bewertung der Archivierungswürdigkeit von Daten der Bio-/Geowissenschaften gemeinsam in interdisziplinärer und interaktiver Arbeitsweise zu entwickeln. Der erarbeitete Kriterienkatalog soll im Ergebnis den Betreibern von Forschungsdatenrepositorien dazu dienen, objektiv Entscheidungen über die Auswahl von Daten für die Langzeitarchivierung zu treffen, die Basis für die Beurteilung geeigneter Möglichkeiten für die technische und organisatorische Umsetzung sind. Im weiteren Verlauf soll der zu erarbeitende Kriterienkatalog dann in den relevanten Fachbereichen vorgestellt und weiter verfeinert werden. Nach Durchlaufen weiterer Iterationen liegt dann ein Bewertungskatalog vor, der den relevanten Konsortien der NFDI zur Annahme vorgelegt werden kann. 

Der Workshop findet am 14. Dezember 2023 (ganztägig) am Deutschen GeoForschungszentrum in Potsdam statt. Da eine aktive Mitarbeit vor Ort erwartet wird, ist eine virtuelle Teilnahme nicht vorgesehen. Die Veranstaltung richtet sich an Experten und Interessierte aus den relevanten Forschungsbereichen, Vertretern relevanter staatlicher Stellen der Datenhaltung, sowie Experten aus dem Bereich des Archivwesens. Eine Mitgliedschaft in einem der Konsortien der NFDI ist nicht erforderlich.

In zunehmendem Maße rücken Forschungsdaten auch in ihrer Form als Forschungsinformationen in den Fokus des institutionellen Publikationsmanagements. Dabei nimmt die Erfassung von Forschungsdaten, die häufig in disziplinären Repositorien gespeichert werden, an wissenschaftlichen Einrichtungen eine immer wichtigere Rolle ein.

Die Forschungsdateninfrastruktur Kadi4Geo

Die Forschungsdateninfrastruktur Kadi4Geo ist Teil des Infrastrukturnetzes Kadi4X, welches am Institut für Angewandte Materialien am KIT entwickelt wird. Es umfasst neben der ursprünglichen Forschungsdateninfrastruktur Kadi4Mat weitere, den Anforderungen der einzelnen Fachdisziplinen angepasste Infrastrukturen wie beispielsweise Kadi4Steel der Bauingenieurwissenschaften oder das Projekt Kadi4Geo für die Geowissenschaften. Die Infrastruktur liefert neben einem ELN (Electronic Lab Notebook) die Möglichkeit über eine visuelle Programmierschnittstelle als auch durch Einbinden von Python code eine direkte Verarbeitung der Eingangsdaten, die damit in Workflows automatisiert verarbeitet werden können. Diese Möglichkeit prädestiniert die Kadi4X Plattform für die Anbindung an KI-Anwendungen und digitale Zwillinge. Als erste Use-Cases der Kadi4Geo Forschungsdateninfrastruktur werden die Großforschungsinfrastrukturen DeepStor und Geolab dienen.

Zugangsgestaltung von 3D-Visualisierungen des geologischen Untergrundes im Geothermischen Informationssystem GeotIS: ein Vergleich von OGC 3D Model Standards

Die Möglichkeit von interaktiven Visualisierungen geologischer 3D-Modelle im Internet durch die Bereitstellung von 3D-Webdiensten und -Applikationen ist immer noch stark von der Homogenität und Interoperabilität der Daten und des Datentransfers abhängig. Um eine interoperable Zusammenführung, Weitergabe und Nutzung von 3D-Untergrundmodellen auf Grundlage verschiedener Eingangsdaten realisieren zu können und diese im Geothermischen Informationssystem GeotIS dem Nutzer zur Verfügung zu stellen, vergleicht das Leibniz-Institut für Angewandte Geophysik derzeit ausgewählte OGC-Dienste als mögliche Lösungsansätze. Für die Entwicklung von Schnittstellen für den Datenaustausch und Benutzerschnittstellen mit grafischer Oberfläche sowie der möglichen Integration in eine Web-Applikation wurden die OGC Standards Indexed 3D Scene Layer (I3S), 3D-Tiles, 3D Portrayal Service (3D PS) und die API 3D GeoVolumes auf ihre Fähigkeit hin verglichen, Interoperabilität in Bezug auf Darstellung, Bereitstellung und Austausch von 3D-Daten zu ermöglichen und zu verarbeiten.

Heatflow.world: an international research data infrastructure for the Global Heat Flow Database

The Global Heat Flow Database serves as a valuable resource for researchers studying Earth's thermal regime. However, accessing and analyzing this vast collection of geothermal data is presently challenging and limits its widespread utilization. To address this, we present a new research data infrastructure and online application to the international heat flow community, facilitating seamless discovery, access and analysis of the data. Developed within the DFG-funded World Heat Flow Database Project, it complements the evaluation of existing data and development of a new, collaborative metadata schema for heat flow data. Our application offers an intuitive interface, allowing researchers to efficiently search, retrieve, and visualize heat flow measurements worldwide. It supports advanced search functionalities that enable users to filter data based on geographical locations, geological parameters, measurement techniques, etc. Integration of powerful data visualization tools allow users to generate maps, plots, and graphs for visual exploration and interpretation. Furthermore, the application incorporates domain relevant statistical analysis functionalities, empowering researchers to perform trend analyses and other statistical assessments directly within the platform. Our application also aims to foster collaboration within the international heat flow community. We incorporate features such as user profiles, discussion forums, and the ability to contribute new data or review existing records.

International Data Week 2023

The International Science Council’s Committee on Data (CODATA) and World Data System (WDS), and the Research Data Alliance (RDA) are organizing International Data Week 2023: A Festival of Data. International Data Week brings together a global community of data scientists and data stewards; researchers from all domains; data, interoperability and informatics experts from all fields; industry leaders, entrepreneurs and policymakers.

First NFDI Berlin-Brandenburg network meeting

The NFDI Berlin-Brandenburg meetings aim at setting up a network of the 25 NFDI consortia located in the Berlin-Brandenburg area. The main goal of the first NFDI Berlin-Brandenburg meeting is to establish contacts between the members of the different consortia, as well as identifying common fields of interest. The 1st EnMAP User Workshop will take place fully online on October 10-11, 2023, and will be jointly organized by DLR and GFZ. 2nd international TERENO-OZCAR conference

The event will offer keynote lectures oral presentations and poster sessions on scientific research on the Critical Zone, which is the most superficial layer of the planet where all human activities concentrate.

The meeting will cover the cutting edge scientific progresses in a variety of  disciplines: hydrology, geophysics, soil sciences, geochemistry, ecology, socio-ecology and will highlight interdisciplinary research to adress critical zone functioning in the anthropocene. DKG '23 Deutsche Kongress für Geographie

On September 08^th 11:00 – 12:00 am there will be an Introduction to NFDI4Earth IG High-performance Computing in Earth System Sciences (Stephan Frickenhaus, AWI) &  Long-term Storage and Archiving (Tim Schürmann, BKG).
The Interest Groups are a forum for the NFDI4Earth community to e.g. identify, discuss and communicate requirements for NFDI4Earth, jointly advance NFDI4Earth-related concepts, technologies and processes, implement NFDI4Earth principles, or to disseminate specific NFDI4Earth offers. GeoBerlin 2023

Geosciences Beyond Boundaries - Research, Society, Future

The year 2023 is a special year for the geosciences in Germany, as two anniversaries will be celebrated at once. On the one hand, the German Geological Society - Geological Association (DGGV) celebrates its 175th anniversary. Its founding fathers also inspired the establishment of the Prussian Geological Survey 150 years ago. It was particularly characterized by its high scientific performance

combined with a transnational and international commitment. Today, the role is performed by the Federal Institute for Geosciences (BGR) in the community of the State Geological Services of Germany. Both anniversaries will be duly celebrated at the annual DGGV meeting from September 3 to 8, 2023. At the same time, we will be looking towards the future. In accordance with the motto "Geosciences Beyond Boundaries - Research, Society, Future", the future challenges of the geosciences in Germany will be the focus of the conference. The conference will be held under the auspices of the Freie Universität Berlin.

The Association of Geographic Information Laboratories in Europe (AGILE) has held annual conferences focused on Geographical Information Science since 1998. The next AGILE 2023 conference will be held in Delft, the Netherlands, on 13-16 June 2023.

The conference theme ‘Spatial data for design’ will emphasize links between GI Science and various design activities, such as addressing data, software, and workflows needed for or generated in the process of spatial planning and design. The newly founded YoungMin group of the German Mineralogical Society (DMG) invites to its kick-off meeting from 09.06-11.06.2023 at the Naturfreundehaus Hannover. Welcome are bachelor, master and doctoral students, but also older, experienced mineralogists (and all who feel at home in the large group "mineralogy"). The main goal is to support young scientists on their career path in the field of mineralogy and to establish and promote valuable connections between Early Career and Senior mineralogists in research, industry and further.

ESWC2023 Extended Semantic Web Conference

3rd Workshop on Metadata and Research (objects) Management for Linked Open Science - DaMaLOS 2023 is co-located with ESWC on the 28th or 29th of May 2023. Building Bridges for the Next Generations

As a neutral mediator, science has always been able to build bridges and cross borders – whether they are geographical, disciplinary or societal. It is important to strengthen already existing connections among international partners in Central Europe and to build new alliances among the younger generations. This May, scientists from Poland, the Czech Republic, Germany and other Central and Eastern European countries will come together and discuss how to solve urgent research questions, especially in the areas of Health, Information Technology/AI and Energy & Climate. They will have the opportunity to exchange ideas with international experts from public offices, as well as partners from the industry and start-up scene.

For participants from outside of Dresden, accommodation expenses (one night) will be covered by the host.

The second workshop of the Inter-Commission Committee on Geodesy for Climate Research (ICCC) of the International Association of Geodesy (IAG)

An online event. Abstract submission and participation in the workshop are free of charge!

The growing data record from numerous geodetic observation techniques (GNSS station observations, satellite radio occultation and reflectometry, satellite gravimetry, satellite altimetry, InSAR, VLBI, GNSS controlled tide gauges, etc) provides a new quantitative view on various variables that are relevant for climate research, such as tropospheric water vapor, thermospheric neutral density, terrestrial water storage, ice sheet and glacier mass, sea level, sea surface winds, ocean waves, subsurface and surface currents, and sea ice extent and thickness.

This workshop intends to:

1) Highlight the potential of geodesy for climate research by showcasing and discussing climate-related studies making use of geodetic observations.

2) Bring together geodetic and climate scientists to facilitate exchange of their experience and possibly establish a mutual cooperation.

Towards a FAIRer World: Implementing the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science to address global challenges

On March 29, 2023, UNESCO, the International Science Council (ISC) Committee on Data (CODATA), and World Data System (WDS) will host a joint symposium entitled "Towards a FAIRer World: Implementing UNESCO's Recommendation for Open Science to Address Global Challenges".

The symposium examines next steps in developing cooperative scientific, digital, and ethics frameworks for implementing the principles and values expressed in the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science while responding to the seven areas of action it sets out.

RDA 20th Plenary Meeting

RDA P20 will take place at the Lindholmen Conference Centre, Gothenburg (Sweden). Daniel will introduce Docker for reproducible data science and discuss for whom and when docker could be a good choice. Afterwards, we will do a hands-on exercise in using Docker.

Cloud Services for Synchronization and Sharing Conference – CS3

The CS3 community consists of providers, developers, and users of innovative storage and sync&share systems. Its services are integrated with user environments and higher-level application services. Furthermore, CS3 reports on the progress in data science at all levels, namely local laboratories, regional collaborations, and global science. CS3 applications range from innovative big-data analysis to science outreach and education. The CS3MESH4EOSC project is an official supporter of CS3 Conference 2022. Julia will talk about her experience and workflows for using GitLab, as an example for source code management and hosting on git basis, to conduct and manage collaborative projects that aim for Open Source publishing (https://fernlab.gfz-potsdam.de/).

2.2 Notebooks, Juypter and Quarto (Dominik Hezel, Uni Frankfurt)
Dominik will talk about the using jupyter notebook and other options for reproducible research and fast publishing of results. Further, he will introduce how Juypter notebooks can be used to create a web application for learning Phyton.

deRSE23 - Conference for Research Software Engineering in Germany

deRSE23 is the third conference for Research Software Engineering in Germany and has gained around 100 submissions for the three-day event. The aim is to reflect the diverse community of research software engineers by seeking input from all levels of experience and across a variety of domains, geographic locations, genders, and ethnicities. Wednesday 22nd will be a day of workshops.
