Integration of Advanced Software Technologies

Our mission

We support the integration of advanced software technologies with the NFDI4Earth community

by investigating, assessing and improving new technologies and their potential value for NFDI4Earth users and infrastructures. The main focus is on “data cube technologies for gridded data”, but not limited to these. We use data cubes as an umbrella term for software solutions that enable users to map functions and workflows on large data cubes.

Identification and assessment of new technologies enabling complex analysis of large ESS data

We provide best practice guides towards usage of these new developments around new data formats and processing tools for large gridded data with an emphasis on their usability for NFDI4Earth users and their application of FAIR principles. We examine existing open source solutions and identify gaps and possible improvements and compile the state-of-the-art solutions to cloud based data storage and analysis

Supporting relevant pilot studies and academy members in the application and extension of these technologies

We work in close collaboration with the NFDI4Earth pilot projects that plan to use gridded data and some advanced data storage technologies. We create and maintain synergies between the pilots and help them in finding and developing fitting pairs of storage and development tools for their respective use cases.

Early adoption of NFDI common standards for data cube technologies

Working with select pilot projects that use data cube technologies and we seek to implement common standards emerging in the community. We will generate a best practices guide to implement these standards for new data formats and therefore guiding users in using them in a FAIR way.

Enhance existing open-source solutions where necessary

We actively contribute to the development of community-driven open source projects to support the pilot studies or to consolidate the implementation of metadata standards to meet the NFDI common standard. The open source software contributions and their added value for NFDI users will be summarized in an annual report on the software improvements that have been implemented by the team.
